Thanksgiving Has Arrived at the King Office

The talents of our Cobra artists grace the campus and walls of our main office. Students in Mr. Pettit's art class "grew" these pumpkins using cray pas/colored pencils and the techniques of gradations, patterns and line work. Come and see the rich colors and details of these beautiful home-grown pumpkin patches.

Happy Thanksgiving to All Our King Ohana!

Campus Parking Reminders

To our Parents, Grandparents, Aunties and Uncles who transport our Cobras to and from school:

Help us keep our campus safe for our students and staff by adhering to our drop-off and pick-up routes. Please note parking areas that are restricted to King staff and/or Windward District Office personnel and their visitors. Please do not block their entry/exit by double parking in those lots.   Also, our students are reminded to use the crosswalks but please keep a careful eye out for them. Thanks!

Make Report Card Time a Positive One for Everyone

Report Card Time

First quarter report cards were mailed home during the Fall recess. For some students and families, it will be a time for smiles and congratulations.  For others, it may be a time of disappointment and frustration.  How parents react to a report card is very important to your child.

Tips for Parents:
SIT DOWN with your child and look over the report card.
PRAISE YOUR CHILD. Find at least one good thing, e.g. a good grade, good attendance.
BE CALM! Let your child tell you about his/her grades – the good and the bad.
ASK your child what he/she can do to earn better grades.
ASK your child how you can help him/her do better in school.

If improvement is needed, MAKE A SPECIFIC PLAN with your child. Poor grades are often due to frequent absences, missing assignments, and/or poor quality of work turned in. For example:  "Your homework time will be from 3:00-5:00 p.m., everyday, TV/cell phone will be off. No work, no play." or "I will check your planner daily for written assignments and due dates." Look at your family schedule to make sure that it allows for time/quiet/space for homework. Prioritize events and appointments.
Support daily, on-time attendance to school.
Encourage attendance to school tutorial (schedule below)
Encourage your child to ask for HELP from teachers and/or counselor.

Parents: What grade would you give yourself at report card time?
If you haven't received a report card by October 17th, please call your child's counselor at 233-5727 (7th - Ms. Anderch, ext. 230 and 8th-Ms. Mumaw, ext. 232)

Message from Ms. Albert, Complex Area Superintendent

Keep Our Students Safe

King Parents and Ohana,

Help us keep our campus safe for our student pedestrians. Please follow the map routes below for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.  It is a very short walk from the gym to the main campus. Although our students are instructed to use the crosswalks,  they are not always as attentive to traffic as they should be. We ask for your help in minimizing the on-campus traffic and by driving at a slower, safe speed. Also, please minimize potential distractions by turning down loud car radios when on campus.

Winners of a video contest to discourage school truancy were announced yesterday. The “Be Pono – Be in School” video contest was organized by schools on the Windward side of Oahu. Judges awarded prizes valued at $10,000. More than 1,500 students – some in kindergarten – created and produced a total of 60 video entries.

Described as the state’s first district-wide attendance-campaign video contest, it launched last month and drew participation by one-third of all Windward District schools. Entrants submitted 30-second spots focused on the importance of coming to school on time and staying in school.

The three categories were group, individual and school. The winning videos are posted online here:

Group:
1. 1st place: Third-grade Language Arts class, Aikahi Elementary; “Pono and Zono”; prizes – Whole Foods pizza party; Safeway gift cards; Glow Putt Mini Golf passes

2nd place: Lunch Video Club, King Intermediate; “Be”; Sunset Ranch group outing, Papa John’s Pizza, Safeway gift cards - Kylie Bean, Bailey Nakano, Tani Simms, Kylie Tangonan

3rd place: Lunch Video Club, King Intermediate; “Rewind”; Sunset Ranch group outing, Papa John’s Pizza, Safeway gift cards - Ka'uhane Cervantes, Kaylen Yee, Hiilani Alina Kamark

Additionally, all video entries were placed in a random bonus-prizes drawing that included Soljah Surf Camp lessons; passes to Kualoa Ranch, Consolidated Theatres, Waikiki Aquarium, Polynesian Cultural Center and Bishop Museum; and Chuck E. Cheese’s party packs. All participants will receive certificates of participation.
