A Parents Guide to the 5Rs

Know It! Live It! Teach It!

RespectHonoring oneself, others, the environment, and authority
Live It!
·      Be aware of the words you use to describe others. Be sure they are words you want your children to use.
·      Just because it is not yours, that doesn’t mean you can’t take care of it.
·      Pick up trash when you come across it.
Teach It!
·      Talk to your children respectfully, when you do, they will speak respectfully to others.
·      Take your children on a graffiti cleanup to help them learn to respect their community.
·      Teach your children to turn their cell phones, I-pods, and other electronics off when they are at meals, in church, or at other public gatherings.

Responsibility – Taking ownership of one’s actions, obligations, and commitments
Live It!
·      Follow the rules, whether driving, playing a game, or waiting in line.
·      Take care of your personal belongings and property.
·      Be on time, this shows you can keep your word and that you respect others.
Teach It!
·      Have fair rules and enforce them every time. This teaches your children to take responsibility for their behavior.
·      Give children chores to teach them that they are capable individuals. Have positive and negative consequences.
·      Make your children responsible for completing their homework; it is their responsibility, not yours.

Resourcefulness – Being skilled and imaginative in finding ways to succeed
Live It!
·      Try to fix broken things instead of just throwing them away.
·      Stay informed by reading the paper, newsletters, and magazines so you know what resources are available and what is going on in the community and the world.
·      Think about the consequences of your actions.
Teach It!
·      Show your children how you face and solve problems so that they will learn problem solving skills.
·      When your children ask for help, show them how to find the answer instead of giving it to them. This teaches them to solve problems for themselves.
·      Teach them how to use what they have to accomplish what they need to do.

Relationships – Valuing the benefit of working and playing together
     Live It!
·       Treat your partner the same way you want to be treated.
·     Share the household chores and raising the children equally but also have fun together.
·     Treat others kindly and offer help when you can.
Know It!
·     Take your children with you when you volunteer in the community so they can learn by your example the value of giving back to their community.
·     Listen to your children so they learn to listen to you and other adults.
·     Learn who your children’s friends are and encourage them to spend time in your home so that you can help them develop positive friendships.

Resiliency – Adapting and striving for positive outcomes in adverse situations
Live It!
·     Make sure that you do something healthy to relieve your stress regularly.
·     Accept negative outcomes and make plans to overcome them.
·     Use outside resources for help whether it is help to fix your car, watch the kids, or just someone to talk to.
Teach It!
·     When your child doesn’t do well on an assignment make sure you point out what he did well and then help him figure out a better way to do it next time.
·     If your child doesn’t make the team or win a prize make sure he congratulates those that do and let him know that everyone can’t be the ‘best’ at everything and encourage him to continue playing for the enjoyment.
·     Don’t give up. If your child experiences failure, remind him that it takes practice to succeed, i.e. riding a bike.
