Students' Art Brings Pizzaz to Zippy's!

Zippy's Kaneohe continues to generously donate the walls of their dining room to showcase the wonderful artwork of our 7th grade students in Ms. Jean Noguchi's art class. Shown fine paper-cutting art done by master craftsmen in China, students strove to capture the intricate detail, imagination and excitement of this technique in their own pieces.

Throughout the dining area are fifty silhouette designs with the theme of "trees and landscapes."   These creations began with three trees as "silhouettes" (shadow, outline, contour) attached to a border on black paper, then cut as though they are cutting through a "window."   The process is to cut the images as silhouettes (minus details) with scissors and a craft knife. The trees and border remain connected. The black silhouette is then placed on a color which echoes the first, as well as grows its own silhouette shapes.  The idea demonstrates depth or deep space with each layer. This is then placed on a third color, where animals, houses, birds, etc. may be added. With each layer, new things are added.  The students have the challenge of keeping the silhouettes attached to the border/the window without cutting it off.

Once completed, students must evaluate their work and ask themselves, "how does the silhouette act as a frame or window on the world?" Or, "how does the silhouette create an added dimension and the illusion of depth in the picture?"  What do you think? Food for thought! Stop by at the Kaneohe Zippy's and enjoy the food and the great inspirational art. Thank you to manager Troy Kane and his associates for their support.
