We will be having three testing sessions for our 2013-14 Honors
program. All 6th graders who are interested in King's Honors Program,
including students who are currently in an elementary GT program, must apply.
Current King 7th grade students who are not in the Honors Program can
also attend these testing sessions. Current 7th graders already in Honors classes do not need to take the tests for the 8th grade Honors Program.
The dates are as follows:
Students can take only one test (Language Arts or Math) on either January 29 or January 31. Students can take both tests on January 26. Students may choose to come on any of the three days. Each test is approximately one hour.
If you would like your child to be considered for King's Honors Programs, he/she may apply for eligibility by completing the registration form, provide the requested documents, and take the screening tests. Information/registration packets for honors testing have been provided to the elementary schools for 6th grade students. Current King 7th grade students who are interested in the 8th grade Honors program can pick up the information packet from their counselor. Please complete the registration packet prior to arriving on testing day and have the required copies of documents with you when checking-in for testing.
Please take note of these dates and plan accordingly. No additional testing dates will be scheduled. If you have any questions about the Honors program, please contact Edna Narimatsu, edna_narimatsu@notes.k12.hi.us or Gwynne Staton, gwynne_staton@notes.k12.hi.us or call them at 233-5727, ext. 284.

Students' Art Brings Pizzaz to Zippy's!
Zippy's Kaneohe continues to generously donate the walls of their dining room to showcase the wonderful artwork of our 7th grade students in Ms. Jean Noguchi's art class. Shown fine paper-cutting art done by master craftsmen in China, students strove to capture the intricate detail, imagination and excitement of this technique in their own pieces.
Throughout the dining area are fifty silhouette designs with the theme of "trees and landscapes." These creations began with three trees as "silhouettes" (shadow, outline, contour) attached to a border on black paper, then cut as though they are cutting through a "window." The process is to cut the images as silhouettes (minus details) with scissors and a craft knife. The trees and border remain connected. The black silhouette is then placed on a color which echoes the first, as well as grows its own silhouette shapes. The idea demonstrates depth or deep space with each layer. This is then placed on a third color, where animals, houses, birds, etc. may be added. With each layer, new things are added. The students have the challenge of keeping the silhouettes attached to the border/the window without cutting it off.
Once completed, students must evaluate their work and ask themselves, "how does the silhouette act as a frame or window on the world?" Or, "how does the silhouette create an added dimension and the illusion of depth in the picture?" What do you think? Food for thought! Stop by at the Kaneohe Zippy's and enjoy the food and the great inspirational art. Thank you to manager Troy Kane and his associates for their support.
Artwork on display by the following students: Skeuo Francis, Theo Palencia, Zerek Bee, Elizabeth Elliot, Hunter Resch, Chauncey Kukahiko, Walter Saragosa, Kekai Ukauka, Kacie Lam, Christian Dover, Matthew Kanda-Perry, Alexus Mailo, Alexis Daraban, Char-Lynn Wong, Zhane Chang-Holloway, Ariel Hamilton, Elton Naki, Ezekiel Rombawa, Travez Saizon, Sarai Silva, Cody Silva, Lillian Stafford, Daizanae Yancey, Alex Yee, Aiden Fike, Pomai Kim, Kelsey Moore, Jasper Pascua, Gideon Ryder-Duncan, Zayda Amantiad, Gavin Carvalho, Kekoa Martinez-Laa, Kawai Naki, Crisman Caga-Anan, Lukela Hoapili, Natasha Pang Kee-Shimabukuro, Ciana Rivera, Hiilani Alina-Kamark, Dylan Lujan, Chevy Cook Salinas, Maiah Hamacon, Seth Dick-Correa, Brycen Kawamoto, Lilia Morgan, Brylan Kaneshiro, Spencer Kerkau, Casey Abregano, and Bima Timtiman.

Map it BIG!
Students in Ms. Chan, Ms. Javier and Mr. Llewellyn's 8th grade science classes got a unique opportunity to work with a National Geographic Travelling Map of the Pacific Ocean. Students were able "be in and on" the earth's plates, currents and other features. The event was made possible by "Women in Technology," in an effort to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) ideas among our students.

Cobras of the Month: August and September
Living the 5Rs @ King!
CONGRATULATIONS to our August and September Cobras of the Month.
These students have been
selected by their team teachers because they consistently demonstrate their
Cobra Pride by living the 5R’s everyday. They are respectful, responsible,
resilient, resourceful and build positive relationships. They were recently honored at a school assembly and received a certificate, portrait and a gift card. Also recognized at the assembly were our 100 7th grade and 83 8th grade students who had "perfect attendance" (no absences, no tardies) in all 8 classes. Senator Jill Tokuda has "adopted" King Intermediate and has made the promotion of good attendance her focus for this year.

Our Library will Recycle Your Reusable Bags
Our library is accepting your donations of your extra reusable shopping bags (cloth-type). Our students are asked to take off their shoes/slippers when they enter the library (keeps our carpet clean!). They place their footwear in bags and carry it with them to their seat for safe-keeping. Your bags will be put to daily use by our students! You can drop them off at the office. Thanks!

1st Quarter Report Card Time
First quarter report cards will be mailed home
during the Fall Intersession (Oct. 1-5). For some students and families, it
will be a time for smiles and congratulations. For others, it may be a time of disappointment and
frustration. How parents react to
a report card is very important to your child.
Tips for Parents:
SIT DOWN with your child and look over the
report card.
PRAISE YOUR CHILD. Find at least one good
thing, e.g. a good grade, good attendance.
BE CALM - Let your child tell you about
his/her grades – the good and the bad.
ASK your child how you can help him/her do
better in school.
ASK your child what he/she can do to earn
better grades.
If improvement is needed, MAKE A PLAN with
your child. Poor grades are often due to frequent absences, missing
assignments, and/or poor quality of work turned in. Address these areas. Come
up with some agreements on afterschool tutorial, study time at home, and
scheduling of non-school activities.
Clearly convey to your child your
EXPECTATIONS for the 2nd quarter and the SUPPORT you will provide.
If you need assistance with developing a plan for 2nd Quarter,
please call your child’s counselor:
