 HSA Round 2 Starts Now!

Our 7th and 8th grade students will
"Catch the Wave" in Round 2 of HSA Testing in April

Parents and families can help our students do their best by paying attention to these test taking strategies:
  • Make sure your child is well-rested, eats nutritious foods and gets daily exercise
  • Establish a reasonable bedtime and provide an alarm clock for on-time wake-up.
  • Make a healthy breakfast part of their morning routine, either at home or at our cafeteria
  • Be prepared by having books, backpacks and clothes ready the night before. Allow time for traffic, weather and other possible delays.
  • Arrive at school with time to spare...to talk with friends, eat breakfast in the cafeteria and to report to the first class on-time.
  • Speak positively to your child about testing. Acknowledge that testing can be challenging, but encourage them to put forth their best effort and don't give up. Reassure them that they will have 3 testing opportunities to demonstrate their abilities (highest score counts) and what really counts is that they have done their best!
Students are tested in their English, Math or Science classes. It is an on-line test that is conducted in our computer labs.
April 1 - 9: HSA Round 2 Reading

King "STRIVES HI"

The King Intermediate teachers, staff and students were honored on March 1, 2013 with one of the first "Strive HI" awards presented by the Department of Education for outstanding achievement. This award is given to schools who have shown significant academic progress for two consecutive years.  A total of 32 schools statewide received monetary awards ranging from $12,500 to $100,000. King was one of five schools that received the highest award amount of $100,000. Benjamin Parker Elementary School was also honored for their exceptional achievement with a $62,500 award.

As hosts for this inaugural DOE ceremony, Principal Sheena Alaiasa welcomed Governor Neal Abercrombie, Schools Superintendent Matayoshi and other dignitaries to our campus. A special Maori greeting was performed by the principal's family in honor of this special day. Students from King's Polynesian Dance class also shared their aloha with a hula for our guests. In receiving the award, Ms. Alaisa said “receiving recognition for the work that we as educators do, goes a long way.  We believe in educating our future, we believe in our talents and abilities to teach, and more importantly, we believe in our children. To have this honor bestowed upon our school is affirmation that we are on the right track and that we have made a difference.” Much thanks and appreciation was extended to all King teachers and staff, and most importantly to all our students (including those now at Castle) who have worked hard and diligently in the past several years. A big "mahalo" also goes out to all  King parents who support and encourage their child everyday. Such an accomplishment as this could not be done without the families and community.
